There are a few things other than penguins but not a huge variety on the land, just seals and a few different birds plus one or two insects (penguins and elephant seals with big long trunks are my favourties because they’re really funny). In the sea though, it’s one of the most diverse areas of the planet. There are killer whales, octopuses, giant sea spiders, sea cucumbers, loads of starfish, cod and my favourite – sea lemons!
There are marine biologists and divers working here all year round, even when the sea is frozen. They use a chain saw to cut a hole in the ice, tie themselves with a long cord to the surface and dive. They are studying how the animals here are reacting to the sea which is warming up really rapidly as part of climate change. Some of the fish here have antifreeze in their blood!
