They do for literature. See: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/shortfacts.html

Harold Pinter and Doris Lessing are two recent English language writing winners.,

Only two people have ever refused any Nobel Prize on a personal basis (as opposed to their government forcing them to).

One was for literature. Do you know who it was?

By the way best Pinter play – The Caretaker. I haven’t read the older “classic” Lessing, but I really liked “The Good Terrorist”. I thought her science fiction a bit weak personally.

      Hi Antonia

Do you mean Nobel prizes for English?

No – but there is a Nobel prize for literature so writers in English are in with a chance at least!

Doris Lessing won the Nobel for literature just two or three years ago. People tell me she is great writer – I admit I haven’t read any of her work. Maybe I should.
