A lot of nuclear power questions coming up. I address nuclear power in a political and pragmatic way.

My main issue with nuclear power is that it is intimately linked with nuclear weapons. The two industries go hand in hand with nuclear power plants feeding into nuclear weapons. Historically this was a bad thing. Clearly with Iran it is still a big issue.

Pragmatically I think a mixed economy in power is probably a good thing. Every energy source has environmental impacts – if you think renewables are environmentally friendly look at all the homes on the Yangtze river in China flooded to make way for the hydro power plants there.

Nuclear of course is safer then all other forms of power UNTIL something goes wrong. Then it could go very wrong. So you are balancing low risk/high damage versus medium risk/medium damage. I don’t think these are trivial questions to answer and so I won’t be manning the protest barricades anytime soon
