Actually I do already! I study the small things inside cells that consume the oxygen the blood delivers. These are called mitochondria (they were George Lucas’s inspiration for the midichlorions that carry “the force” in Star Wars). At the moment I am trying to get money to study the effect of gases other than oxygen on mitochondria. Surprisingly toxic gases such as nitric oxide (car exhaust), carbon monoxide (dodgy gas heaters) and hydrogen sulphide (hot springs and farts) seem to be good for you in small amounts. What doesn’t kill you makes you strong. I think the mitochondria may play an important role in this and hope to prove this is the case. I just need the £200,000 to test my theory!
