      I was interested in the chemistry of haemoglobin – the protein that makes red blood cells red. This is a great protein to study as;

      1 It is easy to get lots of it. I can just bleed myself!
      2 It is really important and interesting so satisfies my curiosity
      3 There are lots of diseases associated with it so it is possible to get people to pay you to study it.

      So it was really the biochemistry – the hamoglobin molecule – that got me interested first. The fact that it is in blood came later.
