I started at Essex working on the proteins in the body that use up all the oxygen. But the person in the lab. next to me was working on the proteins that carry oxygen around the body. He was particularly interested in haemoglobin, the protein that gives red blood cells their red colour. At a biochemical level switching between proteins is easy so I started working in collaboration with him. I have been working on haemoglobin – and hence red blood cells – for the last 10 years.

      So a chance occurrence really.
